How do you choose outdoor porcelain paving? Our order of decisions
Where is it going? Patio, path, around a garden room or a roof terrace. This decides how it will be laid.
How will it be laid? On a mortar bed over a prepared base, or on adjustable pedestals over a solid base. Your installer will advise for your site.
What size? Larger slabs give a cleaner look with fewer joints; smaller formats suit curves and tight spaces.
Which look? Natural stone, granite, limestone, travertine, marble, concrete or terracotta effects, in greys, buffs, creams and darker shades.
How much? Measure the area and add an allowance for cuts, then ask us to quote.
What sizes does 20mm porcelain paving come in?
Sizes depend on the design. Common formats include:
60x60 cm: versatile for patios and paths. Watch out for: plan the layout so cut slabs are not too narrow at the edges.
60x90 cm and 45x90 cm: a longer, modern look. Watch out for: decide the laying pattern (straight or offset) before work starts.
40x80 cm: suits paths and narrower areas. Watch out for: more joints than larger slabs.
50x100 cm, 76x76 cm and 80x80 cm: larger open patios. Watch out for: heavier to handle; the base must be well prepared.
Is porcelain paving slippery?
All of our outdoor porcelain is R11 slip rated: a textured anti-slip surface designed for outdoor use in wet weather. As with any outdoor surface, keep it clear of moss and leaves.
What do you need in place before you buy porcelain paving?
The area measured in metres (length x width), plus an allowance for cuts.
A landscaper or installer booked. We can introduce you to trusted local fitters.
A plan for the base: a properly prepared sub-base for a bedded patio, or a solid, level base for pedestals.
For bedded laying, a priming slurry (bonding primer) to help the mortar grip the back of the porcelain.
Collection from our Doagh showroom or carrier delivery (ask for a quote).
Payment: all orders are paid in full before supply.
What do people get wrong with porcelain paving?
Skipping the priming slurry. Porcelain is very dense, so mortar does not grip it well on its own.
A poor base. Most problems with patios come from what is underneath, not the slab.
Ordering too little. Order enough, including cuts, in one go so the finish matches.
Do you supply landscapers and developers?
Yes. Landscapers, builders and developers are welcome: ask about trade pricing. All orders, trade included, are paid in full before supply.
Outdoor porcelain paving: frequently asked questions
Is outdoor porcelain paving frost resistant?
Good-quality porcelain absorbs very little water, which is why it suits outdoor use in our climate when it is laid correctly. Check the data sheet for the tile you choose.
What does R11 mean?
R11 is a slip-resistance rating for floor tiles. All the outdoor porcelain we supply is rated R11.
How much paving do I need?
Measure the length and width of the area in metres, multiply them, and add an allowance for cuts. Bring your measurements and we will work out the quantity.
Do you deliver to site?
Carrier delivery is available: ask for a quote. You can also collect from our Doagh showroom.
Can I see the paving before I buy?
Yes. Come and see it in our Doagh showroom. We don't usually provide take-away samples.
